Being that Valentines Day is about love, I thought I would share some of my favorite Scriptures on love.

Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, [love] is not pompous, it is not inflated,d5it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury,e6it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth.7It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.f

* Love never fails. If there are prophecies, they will be brought to nothing; if tongues, they will cease; if knowledge, it will be brought to nothing. 1 Cor. 13:4-8

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’j31The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”k Mk. 12:30-31

For God so loved the world that he gave* his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. Jn. 3:16

These are just a few of the scriptures where the word “love” is used.  There are many places in scripture where love is spoken of and examples given, yet the word is not used.

Of course 2 of the greatest examples of love in Scripture is God becoming man and living among us, beginning with His humble birth in a stable.

The other is the suffering, death and Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ for our Salvation!

The saints also teach us a lot about love!  They are saints because they did/do love and for many they gave his or her life in martyrdom for love of Christ!  Others died a natural death, known as “white martyrdom”.

The saints of the day are…St. Valentine (of course) a martyr from early Christendom.  Also Sts. Cyril and Methodius who died of natural causes.  So we have on Valentines Day a saint who suffered martyrdom and 2 who suffered “white martyrdom”.  There are saints thoughout the church year who teach us greatly about love.

And last but not least there are people whom we know or know of (Pope Francis comes to mind) who still teach us the valuable lesson of love and most important living in the love of God!

Have a wonderful St. Valentine’s Day!
